Today marks the 60th anniversary of Star Trek.
It also happens to be my birthday!
So you can begin to see why I would be talking about it on an authors blog.
My mom was one of those original viewers. She passed away a little over ten years ago, so I can’t ask if she was watching “The Man Trap” on NBC September 8, 1966, but I certainly like to think so.
I was born in 1980, so my Star Trek began in reruns, and then The Next Generation, which began later in my elementary school years. I still remember the day its final episode aired. We went to a local comic book store to buy the adaptation, then we watched the episode itself that evening.
I kept watching. I’ve watched every series, every episode, every movie (“every episode” with the caveat of Scouts, although I have seen it).
I’ve written a lot of Star Trek fiction.
And I’ve used it for inspiration.
I love Star Trek. I never got around to the internet’s favorite pastime of complaining about new Star Trek. If you search back a little you’ll see I wrote a whole book covering how much value I see in all of it.
There’ll be another sixty, and another…
It’s not going away. It’s still evolving. We’ve now seen three distinct sets of Spock, Kirk, and the rest of the original characters. But the horizon continues to expand. It’s exciting to imagine what might come next!
